The Riverside Correctional Facility escapee in Philadelphia at the end of November, Gino Hagenkotter, was tragically found dead inside a warehouse in the Kensington section of Philadelphia on Monday, according to the police.

Hagenkotter, 34, had managed to escape while working on a detail assignment in the orchard behind the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Facility (PICC) on November 30.

Responding to a report of an unresponsive man in a warehouse on East Venango Street, the police identified the deceased individual as Hagenkotter through fingerprint analysis. The escaped inmate lacked any form of identification on his person. A damaged air vent, a dislodged fan, and a nearby ladder are indications that Hagenkotter broke into the warehouse, according to investigators.

According to the report, the cause of Hagenkotter’s death is currently under investigation by the Philadelphia Police Department and the Medical Examiner’s Office.

During a detail assignment in the orchard behind PICC, he requested permission from a guard to use the bathroom, according to Blanche Carney, the Philadelphia Department of Prisons Commissioner. Subsequently, surveillance footage revealed Hagenkotter scaling a fence in the sanitation yard and making his way down Torresdale Avenue.

Hagenkotter had been incarcerated for theft and burglary and participated in a good behavior program. He was scheduled for release into a transitional program on the day of his escape. Commissioner Carney disclosed Hagenkotter’s motivation to escape upon learning he would not be released until April due to an unresolved matter in Bucks County.

The escape of Gino Hagenkotter marked the third such incident from the prison’s campus on State Road in Northeast Philadelphia in 2023. Notably, Ameen Hurst and Nasir Grant’s escape in May resulted in a 10-day manhunt, while convicted murderer Danelo Cavelcante led authorities on a 14-day manhunt in Chester County in September.

Currently, the U.S. Marshals are actively searching for Isaiah Tilghman, an escaped inmate with ties to the Philadelphia area who fled Blair County Prison in western Pennsylvania in December.

Additionally, in Warren County, western Pennsylvania, Michael Burham was captured over a week after his escape in the summer.
