Inmate David Moreno, 38, died in a stabbing at the California Correctional Institution; two other inmates are under investigation.
Authorities reported that David Moreno, 38, an inmate at a maximum-security prison in California, passed away on Wednesday following several stab wounds from two other inmates.
Moreno was assaulted at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi just before nine in the morning, according to a statement released by the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Prison guards deployed chemical agents to immediately break up the attack, but Moreno died on the way to the hospital less than an hour later, according to police.
While Moreno’s death is being investigated, two prisoners, Carlos Cervantes and Armando Taylor, have been placed in restricted quarters, and three weapons created by inmates were seized.
The authorities said that in 2004, David Moreno was given a life sentence with the chance of parole and was placed in a maximum-security prison. In Los Angeles County, he was found guilty on two charges of attempting murder with a gun. He was sentenced to three further years in prison in 2015 for assaulting a non-prisoner while incarcerated.
In 2018, 39-year-old Cervantes traveled from Kern County to the Tehachapi prison. Based on two convictions for first-degree murder with a gun, he was receiving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. In 2020, he was also given extra time for creating a lethal weapon and attacking another prisoner.
Found guilty of murder Taylor was brought from Imperial County to the prison in 2017 to serve a life term with the possibility of parole. Authorities stated that he was given further prison time in 2020 and 2022 for assaults that occurred within the prison.
