The Indiana Department of Local Government Finance hosts a public hearing on the Allen County Jail lease today, set for 4 p.m.
The Indiana Department of Local Government Finance has scheduled a public hearing on Thursday to address concerns regarding the lease of the Allen County Jail.
Individuals who want to present testimony have submitted a request via email to [email protected] by noon today for the Allen County Jail Lease Objection Hearing scheduled at 4 p.m.
The deadline for sending an email to the department is January 18th, particularly for those individuals who wish to present extra evidence for consideration.
Online participation at the hearing is available via the Indiana State Government website at https://www.in.gov/dlgf/understanding-your-tax-bill/dlgf-public-hearings/.
In December, the Allen County commissioners granted approval for the lease agreement, following the prior endorsement by the County Council in November. The responsibility for issuing and repaying bonds, as well as overseeing the construction of the new facility, falls under the purview of the lease-purchase agreement with the Allen County Indiana Building Corp.
The county aims to commence construction of the new jail early this year, with completion expected in 2027.
It is the responsibility of the Department of Local Government Finance to ensure that matters pertaining to the assessment of property taxes and the budgeting of local governments are carried out in line with the laws of the state.
According to its website, it conducts an annual review and approval process for the tax rates and levies of every political subdivision in the state. This includes all cities, counties, municipalities, townships, libraries, school corporations, and other institutions that have the right to levy taxes.
